SAY
NO TO CUT FLOWERS
While most ‘Say it with flowers’, on Valentine’s Day,
Vithal Kamat, Chariman and Managing Director, The Orchid
as well as a renowned ‘green hotelier’ urged people
to “Say no to cut flowers” at a function held at the
hotel in order to spread the message of environment
protection. Shageena Vibhakar, National Co-ordinator
Kids for Tigers Programme of Sanctuary Magazine,
a premiere wildlife magazine of Asia, gave a presentation
on the importance of environment conservation to school
children from Bombay Scottish.
In her presentation, children were told about the ill-effects
of cutting flowers, with the perspective of pollination.
Pollination is a process of transfer of pollen grains,
which contain the cells that develop into male sex cells,
from the male structure of a plant to the female structure
of a plant, which in turn contains the female sex cells.
Pollination prepares the plant for fertilization and
when flowers are culled, the entire process is prevented.
As is known, pollination is essential for the continuation
of plant species. She also emphasized on the role city
people can play in the conservation of nature and wildlife.
Mr. Kamat said, “Since flowers are associated with romance
and consequently the quantum of flowers gifted is very
high on Valentines Day, it was decided to deliver the
message on Valentine’s Day eve and try to curb the incidence
as much as possible”, He is of the firm belief that
conservation is a habit and a way of life, which must
be inculcated at an early stage in life hoping that
it will be a long-term investment in helping us maintain
the ecological balance in the city.
